Habitica alternative: Dungeonlog, a simpler task RPG

If you are looking for a Habitica alternative, Dungeonlog is a simpler, more focused option. Habitica is an established and well-known app for turning tasks into a game. Dungeonlog takes a different road: fewer features, one clear rule per day and a pixel-art look. In this article you will see what Dungeonlog is and how it compares to Habitica in use, price and features.

What Dungeonlog is

Dungeonlog is a task RPG for Android. You build the day's list, and every finished task earns XP, coins and gear for your hero. The core rule is just one: every day a monster appears, and it only falls if you finish all the day's tasks. If a task is left, it escapes and the day does not count.

The monster of the day: it only falls when all the day's tasks are done.

It is a way to turn your list into a challenge with a start, a middle and an end. The counter next to the monster's name shows how much is left, and it drops with every finished task.

One list, one rule

In Dungeonlog, a task has four pieces of information: the name, the repetition (today, week, month or year), the difficulty (trivial, easy, medium or hard) and how many times per day it has to be done. There are no different task types to choose from: it is all the same list, for the day.

Dungeonlog and Habitica, side by side

Both apps use RPG elements to reward tasks, but they pick different things. Habitica's App Store description says it is a free habit-building and productivity app with retro RPG elements, with three kinds of task (habits, repeating tasks and a traditional to-do list), parties, challenges, and gear and pets to collect. Dungeonlog chooses to do less, with a more direct rule.

Rewards and the daily shop

Finishing tasks earns you XP, coins and gear, and coins are spent in the shop. Dungeonlog's shop renews (the screen shows "renews in 4h"), has items of several rarities and highlights a "Deal of the day".

Gear gives XP and coin bonuses, and the inventory adds that bonus up for you. On top of that, there is a bestiary of 63 monsters to complete.

Who Dungeonlog is for

Dungeonlog is for people who want a to-do list with rewards, without building a whole system around it. If you like community, parties and group quests, Habitica may be the better choice. If you want something direct, with one monster per day and a pixel-art look, it is worth trying Dungeonlog: the free plan lets you start without paying anything.
